Abstract

Background. This paper is part of a series exploring the implications of advancements in communication technologies for children’s learning and mind. Lev Vygotsky’s theory of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is arguably the most influential theory in developmental psychology. Much less noticed is that Vygotsky’s theory is founded on an unstated assumption concerning the More Knowledgeable Other (MKO), which has not ever been articulated as such. The MKO assumed by Vygotsky is a human being who, among other things, is conscious, intentional, and able to share the feelings of the learner in a bonding relationship. All these assumptions are presently profoundly altered in that the MKO can also be a computational device located in the learning environment of a class or at home and increasingly embedded within the children’s minds as computational tools are becoming part and parcel of human cognition. The assumptions that grounded Vygotsky’s seminal work are no longer valid; his work has not yet accommodated the new conditions.

Objective. To explore the impact of non-conscious mediation on the internalization process, on semiotic development, and on higher psychological functions. Taking as a reference the empirical-theoretical developmental taxonomy of Synthetes, A-Voiders, and Equilibrants proposed in previous work, we re-examine the Vygotskian-Lurian approach, now with a different perspective, which allows us to examine the diverse theoretical profiles as modalities of synthetic mediation that exercise distinct influences on the development of voluntary activity, on inner speech, and on the regulation of moral behavior.

Design. We carry out a profound reinterpretation of the concept of design from within an original theoretical perspective that draws on Vygotsky’s activity theory and semiotics, A.R. Luria’s neuropsychological theory of higher psychological functions, and a newly emerging field in the philosophy of AI. The paper provides the foundation for this original perspective through the development of a pivotal concept—that of synthetic mediation—referring to a developmental tool or scaffolding that imitates human-to-human interactions occurring within the ZPD but lacking, as in the case of AI, any human features of consciousness, intentionality, and relation.

Results. The results achieved by mediation by means of synthetic tools are completely different from those obtained in the mediation carried out by a human in the ZPD of the child. The Synthete, developed primarily in the context of activities mediated by AI, is able to control the technological skills and operations needed to perform the task assigned to them, without necessarily having a real comprehension of the social interactions provided by the tool-mediated situation. A-Voiders follow the traditional Vygotskian-Lurian development, but risk being excluded from an ever greater number of fields in the socio-cognitive context of the AI society. Equilibrants are instead the fruit of an educational process that aims to let children know the mediation carried out by synthetic tools as a means of negotiating their own way in relation to the technological evolution of their era and in assuming a responsibility in respect to the balance between mediation and non-mediation of the cognitive and social structures.

Conclusion. Vygotsky’s theory is still valid and relevant, but it needs updating with some new ideas to deal with the non-conscious mediator. A ZPD for the age of AI requires us to differentiate between the types of scaffolding that enable children to really learn, as opposed to those that simply lead to the attainment of a hollow competence where there is skill acquisition without the relational, moral, and ethical aspects of learning that have the potential to impart rich meaning and humanizing aspects to the learning process.

MEDIACION SINTETICA Y LA ZONA DE DESARROLLO PROXIMO: REPENSANDO A VYGOTSKY EN LAS INFANCIAS MEDIADAS POR IA Resumen

Antecedentes.

MEDIATION SYNTHETIQUE ET ZONE PROXIMALE DE DEVELOPPEMENT: REPENSER VYGOTSKI DANS LES ENFANCES MEDIATISEES PAR L’IA Resume

Origines.

Conclusion.
