Background. The digital environment is a natural part of adolescent development. Empirical findings linking screen time to psychological well-being remain inconsistent. This study tests whether digital activity, social comparison orientation (ability vs. opinion), or self-image structure (Real, Ideal, Virtual Self) predicts psychological well-being in senior high school students.
Objective. To identify which of three factors – digital activity patterns, social comparison orientation, or self-image structure – significantly contributes to psychological well-being in adolescents aged 15–18 years.
Design. Cross-sectional study with N = 70 (35 male, 35 female). Instruments: digital activity questionnaire; Semantic Differential (Real, Ideal, Virtual Self); EPOCH well-being scale; INCOM social comparison scale. Spearman correlations and multiple linear regression were used.
Results. Median screen time was 6 hours/day with no correlation with well-being (p > 0.05). Most participants (74.3%) showed moderate well-being, 18.6% low, 7.1% high. Real Self-Evaluation was the only significant predictor (β = 0.489, p < 0.001), explaining 23.9% of variance. Neither INCOM total nor its ability/opinion subscales predicted well-being. Screen time did not enter the regression model.
Conclusion. Well-being in the digital environment is determined by self-image structure, not by digital activity or social comparison. The digital environment acts as a context, not a determinant. Interventions should focus on self-acceptance rather than screen time reduction.
Highlights- Real Self-Evaluation is the only significant predictor of adolescent well-being in the digital environment.
- Screen time and social comparison orientation (ability and opinion) do not predict well-being.
- The digital environment is a context, not a determinant.
- Positive real self-integrates Ideal and Virtual Self structures.
- Effective interventions should target self-acceptance, not screen time.
Antecedentes.
Conclusion.
